Pulp Crazy – The Phantom of the Opera by Gaston Leroux

http:///pulpcrazy.com/podcast/115.mp3

In this week’s episode I’m going to be discussing a French Gothic novel that has had considerable influence on the American Pulps and popular fiction in general. The Phantom of the Opera by Gaston Leroux. The story was first serialized in the French newspaper, Le Gaulois from September 23, 1909 – January 8, 1910. It was collected and published in a single volume by Pierre Lafitte in 1910.

I’ve always been casually aware of The Phantom of the Opera. Growing up, there seemed to be a commercial for the Andrew Lloyd Weber musical in steady rotation. Not only that, but the book was parodied a good bit in popular culture, including children’s television shows, which is probably where I first encountered the concept.

It didn’t consider reading this book until I listened to Rick Lai discuss it on The Book Cave and on The French Connection Pulp Fest Panel in 2012. It was obvious that the original novel was different from the musical and other adaptations. I always got the impression that The Phantom of the Opera or Erik as he’s known, was a normal guy that was scarred by acid and wore a mask to cover his face. That’s defiantly not the case in the original novel. In the novel he’s born disfigured, with a face resembling a skull covered with dried up yellow flesh, with burning yellow eyes. In the novel he’s also a former assassin and a master of stealth.

Pulp Crazy Episode 100 – French Pulp Fiction with Jean-Marc Lofficier

http://pulpcrazy.com/podcast/100.mp3

In this special 100th episode of Pulp Crazy, I’m joined by Jean-Marc Lofficier of Black Coat Press. Jean-Marc, a writer, editor, and publisher has a vast knowledge of what has come to be known as French Pulp Fiction. Jean-Marc takes us through history and describes the authors, characters, and concepts pioneered in French popular literature. We also discuss the catalog of Black Coat Press, and Jean-Marc discusses some of the titles they have released, and what is coming down the pipeline. All of this, plus French movie serials, cinema, and even some Philip Jose Farmer talk are thrown into the mix.

It was a pleasure to have Jean-Marc on the show, and I’m grateful he agreed to come on and share his knowledge about French Pulp Fiction.

Pulp Crazy – Doc Ardan: City of Gold and Lepers by Guy D’Armen, Adapted by J-M and Randy Lofficier

In this weeks episode I will be discussing Doc Ardan: City of Gold and Lepers written by Guy d’Armen and adapted and retold by Jean-Marc & Randy Lofficier. The book is published by the Lofficier’s Black Coat Press and is available in paperback, nook and kindle formats. The cover is illustrated by Dean Zachary.

Doc Ardan’s full name is Doctor Francis Ardan, he is a french pulp hero created by Guy d’Armen (likely a pen name according to the Lofficier’s) and first appeared in 1928. The City of Gold and Lepers was his first appearance. It was published in the french magazine Science et Voyages from the May 1928 through November 1928 issue.

Doc Ardan first appearance in 1928 pre-dates Doc Savage’s first appearance in 1933, so he wasn’t originally a character who physically resembled Doc Savage, as he does on the covers of the Black Coat Press books. The original artwork shown on the Black Coat Press site kind of depicts him as a traditional explorer. It appears the Lofficier’s leave the possibility open for Doc Ardan to be a young Doc Savage operating under an alias. According to the introduction, Ardan or Ardent (the t being silent in french) means fierce, fiery, wild or savage, which would be a fitting alias. The Lofficier’s also speculate in the forward that Ardan may be related to Michael Ardan from the story From the Earth to the Moon and Gale Arden from the Flash Gordon series.
